Smoked Old Fashioned

Adding smoke to this classic cocktail adds depth of flavor that compliments the bourbon, while the simple syrup is infused with rosemary, which also plays a role as a swizzle stick. Serve this at your next party for a great conversation piece!



Add the smoke

The smoke in this recipe can be achieved using a smoke block, barrel or topper. Blocks and Barrels are great to infuse the smoke into the glass a topper or infuser will allow you to add smoke after you make the cocktail letting it infuse the bourbon. You can use different types of woods and tools to experiment with different flavors! The possibilities are endless!


Ingredients

  • 2 oz good quality bourbon

  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters, or to taste

  • 1 large segment orange peel

  • 1 teaspoon simple syrup – (simple syrup is a 1/1 ration sugar/water. Cook with rosemary sprig to infuse flavor into the syrup. Can be stored in the refrigerator for a week for making cocktails).

  • 1 maraschino cherry


Instructions - using a board

Burn the wood block with a torch for a few seconds until you have a little smoke. Next, place the glass over the burnt wood for a few minutes. Pour the simple syrup, water, and bitters into the whiskey glass. Stir to combine, then place the ice cubes in the glass. Take the orange peel and swirl around the rim of the glass and then add to the drink. Garnish with a sprig of rosemary. Enjoy!


Instructions - using a infuser

In the whiskey glass or a large glass pitcher, pour the simple syrup, water, and bitters. Stir to combine, then place the ice cubes in the glass. Next, turn on your smoking gun and infuse the pitcher with smoke for 1-2 minutes; close the container with a piece of saran wrap so the smoke is trapped into the glass. Swirl the bourbon around . Take the orange peel and swirl around the rim of the glass and then add to the drink. Garnish with a sprig of rosemary. Enjoy!
